Q2W3D3: Species of Fish in the Philippines

🐠 TLE Grade 8 | Day 3: Species of Fish in the Philippines

Discover the amazing underwater world right here in the Philippines!

🌊 🐟 🐬 🐙 🌿
🌍 Why Are There So Many Fish in the Philippines?

The Philippines is part of the Coral Triangle—the global center of marine biodiversity! 🌟

  • We have 5% of the world’s coral reefs.
  • Our waters are home to over 3,000 species of marine fish!
  • Rich habitats like coral reefs, mangroves, and seagrass beds support this diversity.

📌 Fun Fact: The Philippines has more kinds of reef fish than almost anywhere else on Earth!

🗣️ Why Are Fish Names So Confusing?

Fish names in the Philippines can be tricky because:

  • 👉 The same fish has different names in Tagalog, Cebuano, Ilocano, and other regional languages.
  • 👉 One name (like Lapu-lapu) might refer to several different types of grouper.
  • 👉 Some names are based on appearance—like “Dahong-gabi” (taro leaf) for the batfish!

🔍 Example: The Fraser’s dolphin is called Mayahon in Cebuano, but you might not hear that name in Manila!

✨ Rare & Amazing Fish You Should Know
English Name Local Name Cool Fact
Oilfish Penahon (Cebuano) Shiny and deep-sea dweller!

⚠️ Endangered & Protected Fish (Don’t Catch These!)

Some fish are protected by law under Republic Act 10654 and CITES. It is ILLEGAL to catch, sell, or transport them!

  • Speckled Blue Grouper – Called Percal in Catanduanes
  • Banded Grouper – Known as Manalhog in Negros
  • Humpback Whale – Called Balyena
  • Pygmy Killer Whale – Called Lumod

🚨 Penalty: Up to 20 years in jail and heavy fines!

💡 Why protect them? To keep our oceans healthy and full of life for future generations.
